Melanie

Melanie is Alex’s older sister. She was only two and a half when he was born, so she grew up from the beginning in a reality where hospitals, doctors, rehabilitation and the extra care her brother needed became part of everyday life.

From an early age she had to learn patience and understanding. She often accompanied us during hospital stays, medical appointments and rehabilitation trips. For many years our family life was strongly shaped by Alex’s health and needs.

It is very important to me, however, that Melanie is not seen only as “the sister of a sick child”. She has her own world, interests, talents and dreams.

She attends Camerloher Gymnasium, develops her artistic interests, plays the violin and is learning the piano. She also loves horse riding. She is sensitive, responsible and mature, but she also needs space for her own plans, joy and an ordinary teenage life.

As her mother, I try to make sure that despite all the responsibilities connected with Alex, Melanie also has the opportunity to develop her interests and follow her dreams. I am incredibly proud of her.

Melanie is not only Alex’s sister. She is first and foremost herself – a smart, sensitive girl with her own path, talents and dreams.
